At first glance, Invisalign® and traditional metal braces seem similar — for about the same cost, they both provide you with a stunning smile. However, there are a few differences, some obvious and others more subtle, that our Troy, MI, Invisalign dentist wants you to consider before making your final choice.
Here are 5 ways that
differ from traditional braces.Wearing Clear Aligners Means:
More Dietary Freedom
Unlike braces, clear aligners allow you to eat all of the same foods that you did before you started treatment. When it comes time to eat, just pop out your and enjoy whatever you want. On the other hand, patients with traditional metal braces have to avoid foods that are sticky and/or hard to chew.
This is because there’s a potential to damage existing wires or brackets by accident. Those wearing Invisalign aligners don’t have this problem and just need to make sure teeth are brushed after eating so no food is trapped in the trays leading to bacteria accumulation and stained aligners.
No Uncomfortable Wires and Brackets
Made from clear, smooth plastic fitted specifically to your mouth, Invisalign aligners stay put comfortably without anyone else noticing them. Traditional braces use clunky metal wires that not only cover your teeth, but also irritate your cheeks and gums.
To create your
, we’ll start by taking digital impressions of your teeth using an intraoral scanner that is capable of capturing 3D images. These detailed images will then be sent over to the Invisalign lab where technicians there will produce your very own series of aligners.Once back in our Troy, MI, dental office, the aligners will be given to you with a protective case and general instructions. The first set that you put on will feel tight and uncomfortable but this is normal. The feeling should go away after a day or so. Each aligner set, including the first, will move your teeth gradually for a few weeks before you switch to the next.
We do ask that you wear each set of aligners in your series at least 22 hours a day to ensure proper progress is made. That means in the few hours when you are not eating, drinking beverages other than water, or brushing and flossing your teeth, the aligners are in your mouth.
Straighter Teeth in Potentially Less Time
Average Invisalign treatment takes about 12 to 18 months, using anywhere between 18 and 30 aligners, depending on the shape and structure of your teeth. Throughout the entire process, our dentist will check in with you to make sure the treatment progresses as planned. If you ever have any questions or concerns, our team is here to help!
Keeping Your Teeth Clean Easier
Due to brackets and wires, metal braces can make it difficult to brush and floss all the hard-to-reach areas of your smile. Since Invisalign is removable, you can brush and floss your teeth normally. Your oral health will be better, and your smile will be more beautiful because of the extra attention paid to it.
Our dentist does recommend always having a handy care kit with you that includes a separate toothbrush, tube of toothpaste, and a case. This way, you’re prepared when you’re at work or school and want to do more than simply rinse the trays off after a meal.
Generally, it’s best to clean your clear aligners by:
- Rinsing them with water (never hot)
- Gently brushing them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste
- Thoroughly rinsing them after brushing is done
- Storing the aligners in a protective case when not in use
Smiling with Confidence
Invisalign involves nearly-invisible aligners. This means that you’ll be able to discreetly straighten teeth without anyone having to know! Many of our adult patients in particular appreciate the fact that there is no metal whatsoever on their teeth. This is why we often recommend Invisalign aligners to individuals that are no longer teenagers.
